Dogs barking
Do you have a dog that seems overly skeptical of men in particular? Or just generally skeptical of new people, often when they come into your home? In this blog post I explain why your dog may bark at new people. There is also a video that explains Gripclaw.
Dogs are predators and have instincts that support their survival in the wild. You should be skeptical when something deviates from the norm. There are different situations where dogs bark at people.
2 researchers from New Zealand Min Hooi Yong and Ted Ruffman suggest that dogs are generally more wary of men. The smell and the appearance. Men have more testosterone and are perceived as scarier by the majority of all dogs upon first meeting. They believe that dogs are conditioned to react to men's deeper, lower-frequency sounds because these can signal danger. We all know that dogs themselves growl dully when something threatening approaches, or when defending resources.
Their study included 45 dogs that matched male voices to images of men, but failed to match female voices to female images. The researchers interpreted this as support for the hypothesis that dogs become more attentive and vigilant when they hear men's voices. (Bo Söderström, 2017, p.26)
Many dogs become more alert to unusual appearances, special clothing, beards, hats, height, weight, dark colors or long hair. If the dog is also reserved, it is naturally alert to all new people. Or if it is a dog with a lot of guarding, for example. Cane Corso or Dobberman (the level of guarding differs between individuals) they will naturally be more alert to strangers, especially intruders (guests). With the situation where guests come home to the dog and the family and the dog barks, it is usually based on: Guarding, Alarms, warnings, Resource defense, defense of the territory, excitement or fear. It is usually a combination.
